The ISU for this course will build upon your knowledge of directorial techniques, film genres, and the history of cinema over the past century. You will be working in a small group to first watch a common film, then to read a critical analysis of that film. This will help gain insight into a detailed critical analysis film and allow you to view movies more critically and ensure that your written analysis is specific, detailed, and contains the appropriate language of film analysis. Assignment
Part I – Before Watching the Film You will write a brief (250 word) personal response about what you already know about your movie, predictions you can make from the title, stars, directors other works, and your knowledge of film genres. You will have to create a Wiki for your group, and you will be responsible for making 5 entries over the course of the ISU. Part II – After Watching the Film; Before Reading the Text After you have watched the film you will write a more detailed personal response, critically examining the film, focusing on a minimum of 5 different scenes, examining the effectiveness of at least 5 different directorial techniques (these can and probably will overlap in your chosen scenes). Make sure to examine how the film fits into or works against its genre, and be sure to state whether you felt the movie deserved its “classic work of film” status. Part III – After Finishing the Text As you read you will be required to produce a page of notes and quotations from the text that provide you with new information and insight into the film. You will bring these notes with you to your group meeting. As a group you will discuss your impressions of the film and the analysis found in the critical text. Next you will write a personal report about your engagement with the film. Make sure to include the following sections:
A Title
A condensed version of what you wrote in Part I
The critical analysis you completed on your own in Part II
An explanation of how the critical text has expanded your understanding of the film (with reference to a minimum of 3 scenes; 3 different directorial techniques)
Concluding thoughts about your film/text
Finally, as a group you will complete a Movie Talk presentation. The following sections can be divided up in your group:
Biographical/Contextual information about the director/film
Critical Analysis of two scenes (one person analyzes one scene) – make sure that you include a mixture of your own thoughts and thoughts from the text
Genre Connection – analyze what genre(s) the movie fits into; and why it is important to that genre.
Blade Runner
Spirited Away
Unforgiven
Vertigo
Wizard of Oz
